Volunteer work absolutely belongs on your resume — in the right circumstances. For experienced professionals, it adds dimension to your profile and signals community involvement. For career changers, it can demonstrate practical experience in a new field before you land your first paid role there.

Include volunteer work when: it demonstrates skills directly relevant to your target role (volunteering as a web developer for a non-profit is real development experience), it shows leadership or scale (led a team of 30 volunteers for a national fundraising campaign), you're an early-career professional who needs the space filled, or the organisation is well-known and respected.

Leave it out when: the work is unrelated to your career and you have plenty of professional experience to fill the resume, the description would take more space to explain than it's worth, or you're applying for senior roles where every line should demonstrate strategic impact.
